Analysis over Ch. 11-14

During Ch. 11 Chillingworth was able to look in Mr. Dimmesdale heart and made him feel not only mentally but physical sick. Although he was sick, with sin, Dimmesdale was able to serve mass. In fact his sermons at mass became even better then before hand because since he know what guilt and sin is like and he was able to talk about it with experience. Ironically the people viewed Dimmesdale like a saint when in fact he is sinner.

During Ch. 12 Dimmesdale goes to the scaffold in the middle of the night. He wanted to confess his sin to the public but he is afraid of the consequences. While he is on the scaffold, Hester and Pearl showed up. They joined Dimmesdale on the scaffold. Pearl wants Dimmesdale to confess but he said he could not confess. Then meteors brightened the sky and made the scene at the scaffold like it was in daytime. Dimmesdale was happy that Hester and Pearl was there to comfort him but when the meteors brightened up the sky, he felt the horror of confessing his sin.

During Ch. 13 Hester and her Scarlet Letter are dicussed. The Letter was a symbol of her calling. Many of the people viewed Hester as a kinder person then other people. So the people interpreted the scarlet “A” to mean “Able” for Hester was strong with a woman’s strength. The Scarlet Letter became not only her judge but the other people’s judge too.

During Ch. 14 Hester confronted Chillingworth. Hester wanted Chillingworth to stop torturing Dimmesdale because he was becoming sicker ever day. Also she wanted him to stop because she feels sympathy for Dimmesdale. Chillingworth, on the other hand, believed that Dimmesdale should still be tortured because he has not confessed his sin to the town’s people.
