CH 22-24
Hester and Pearl notice how different Dimmesdale looks: powerful, proud, sure of himself, and healthy. Hester learns that Chillingworth is going to pay Dimmesdale’s fair. Mistress Hibbins approaches Hester and tells her that she knows that she and Dimmesdale were in the woods together, though Hester denies it. Mistress Hibbins leaves as Dimmesdale starts his election sermon. While she is standing at the scaffold, Hester notices that everyone is staring at her.
Dimmesdale finishes his sermon, which is thought to be his best, and processes back through the marketplace. He looks pale and ill, like his old self. Dimmesdale stops at the scaffold and walks up it, bring Hester and Pearl with him. Chillingworth tries to stop him, but to no avail. Dimmesdale confesses his adulterous sin to the people, reveals the A seared into his chest, and dies. Chillingworth is mad to object of his revenge. Hester asks Dimmesdale if they’ll meet each other in the afterlife, and he says that it’s up to God.
Some think that Dimmesdale really did have an A seared into his chest, that he, God, or Chillingworth’s evil drugs put there. Others say there wasn’t and that he confessed to nothing. Chillingworth dies within a year since the object of his revenge is gone. Chillingworth leaves Pearl a sizable inheritance, and she and Hester still go to Europe. However, Hester comes back to New England years later, where she lives until she dies. Her grave is next to Dimmesdale’s, and they share a headstone that has an ‘A’ on a black background.
Plot Questions:
1. What does the phrase on Hester and Dimmesdale’s headstone mean?
2. What does everyone around her do when Hester stands by the scaffold?
3. What does Dimmesdale do as he passes Hester by the scaffold?
Discussion Questions:
1. Why do you think Dimmesdale looks so different as he goes to give his election sermon?
2. Why do you think Dimmesdale reverts to his former nature after give the election sermon?
3. Why do you think Hester came back to live in New England?
