Nathaniel Hawthorn was born in Salem Massachusetts and was descended from a sailor and a judge (John Hathorn who oversaw the Salem Witch trials). Hawthorn’s first four years were spent with his parents in Salem, until is father died of yellow fever. Then he and his mother lived in Raymond Main on the shores of Sebago Lake. Hawthorn then attended Bowdoin College. Hawthorn continued to write until he became a weigher and gauger at the Boston Custom House in 1839 at which time he became ingaged to Sophia Peabody. He then started moving around and writing until he found a home in Concord massachusets where his neighbors were Edger Allen Poe and Henry David Thoreau . In 1846 Hawthorne was appointed to determine the quantity and value of imported goods at the Salem Custom House. At thispoint Hawthorn moved through Europe until diseas brings them back to the states. On May 19, 1864 Hawthorn died in his sleep leaving behind his wife (Sophia) and three kids (Una, Julian, and Rose).
